Dean Zeus Colman, also known as Zeus, is a British artist. He was born in London in 1968. His latest works combine graffiti, typography, sculpture and fine art. The artist is also known as a pioneer of 3D graffiti.
Urban culture is the source of his inspiration. The innovative and dynamic works he has created reflect both his interest in street art and his formal training.
Colman attended Chelsea College of Art from 1994 to 1997.
In the 1980s, when the artist was still a teenager, he began painting graffiti on the streets of London, using Zeus as his tag. A prolific and enthusiastic writer, his work came to the attention of many prominent names in street art culture. At the time, Tim Westwood commissioned him to design his new venue, one of the first hip-hop clubs, the Sparrow, in 1984. Later, Zeus began designing posters for artists signed to Def Jam: for example, Dougie Fresh and Whizz Kid. He also taught young criminals how to paint graffiti in community centres across London, giving them a positive approach to their creativity.
He then enrolled at college and gained a degree in Fine Art. He studied sculpture, which led to his graffiti work morphing into sculptural form.
Dean Zeus Colman works and lives in London, UK.
